U3A: Gilbert and Sullivan - a talk by Bernard Lockett

Monthly meetings with a speaker are held in the Noverre Suite of The Assembly House, Theatre Street, Norwich, NR2 1RQ on the third Wednesday of each month at 2.00pm, doors open 1.30pm.

Two hours are set aside after the speaker to allow members to mix and socialise with each other and the committee.

Tea, coffee, biscuits and tables are provided.

There’s no charge for members (find out how to join here: https://www.u3anorwich.org) and guests cost £2.50.

"The Heritage of Gilbert and Sullivan" begins with an historical background to the partnership and then an assessment and overview of the shows; next a close look at the vast amount of social and political satire within the shows, the reasons and a wry look at how many of the comments are equally as valid to the present day ("Dull MPs", for example!).

Finally there will be an assessment of the worldwide popularity of Gilbert and Sullivan in the 21st century and a look at modern production values. Bernard Locket is a life-long Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiast and has written two books about the subject and since 2010 has been a Trustee of the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival - www.gsfestivals.org - that takes place annually in Buxton and Harrogate and has also toured - twice to Norwich in 2018 and 2019.
